Turbidity Curtains for Construction Zones

In a post-modern world, environmental concerns have become increasingly more evident in man’s endeavors upon the earth. Mankind is becoming more aware of taking care of the planet and through modern technology and human ingenuity has developed tools to help to minimize the harm to the ecosystem through the activities of man. Some of the means by which we are helping man to live in harmony with the environment is through the use of turbidity barriers, turbidity curtains and silt barriers in construction zones.

Construction projects that take place near or upon bodies of water can result in increased turbidity in and around the construction zone. This increased turbidity can cause harm to the ecosystem and disrupt the natural order within an aquatic habitat. In order to be able to undertake construction projects and preserve the aquatic environment, turbidity control devices can be implemented to lessen the negative effects that construction projects can wreak upon a body of water.

Construction sites can result in soil erosion that if left unchecked can result in increased levels of silt and sediment in adjacent aquatic bodies. Turbidity control devices such as turbidity curtains, turbidity barriers, and silt barriers when used in construction zones can act as a shield against these solid particles that can build up in a body of water due to the work being done. By controlling the turbidity levels, the negative impact on water systems can be kept to a minimum level.

Controlling turbidity is not just a good idea, it is something that is required in some areas, and regulated by certain authorities. There are regulations that are in place that have been enacted to control the turbidity levels in construction zones. There are agencies that monitor turbidity levels and also enforce the regulations concerning turbidity levels.

It may not be possible to negate all of the negative impact that man has and has had upon the planet, but through the use of tools such as turbidity curtains, turbidity barriers, and silt barriers the impact can be lessened. Our waterways are one of our most precious resources; we should use the means that we have available to protect them.

What are Floating Turbidity Curtains?

Contractors who have to do projects adjacent to and sometimes upon bodies of water can find themselves faced with a daunting dilemma. Sometimes during a construction project, the earth can be disrupted and the end result can be soil erosion and increased turbidity in the surrounding aquatic environment. In some areas, there are regulations and standards that deal with turbidity to which contractors have to give adherence. A helpful tool to help solve the dilemma of erosion and increased turbidity is turbidity curtains, turbidity barriers, and floating turbidity curtains.

The floating turbidity curtain is a vinyl barrier that works as shield to stop solid particles from going into aquatic environments; the turbidity curtain gives the solid particles time to settle instead of flowing into other parts of the body of water. The floating turbidity curtain is equipped with floats and a ballast weight chain system that help to suspend the curtain in the water. Floating turbidity curtains when used as a turbidity barrier can enable contractors to pursue various projects that involve being around water systems and actually performing projects on a body of water. For instance, marine construction projectssuch as piers, beaches, or any oceanic project that could result in excess silt being stirred up that could exceed set standards or be harmful to the environment.

The benefit of a floating turbidity curtain is in the fact that it can be utilized apart from land areas which allows workers to perform their work right on a waterway while keeping undesired turbidity at a minimum as the curtain contains the silt that is stirred up by the construction.

As contractors are faced with higher environmental standards, turbidity curtains can be a tremendous asset to help them to complete their projects and comply with these standards. Erosion, turbidity, and unwanted silt build-up and displacement are inevitable at construction sites that are beside waterways are upon waterways; this is a problem that contractors must address. The use of floating turbidity curtains is an effective solution to this problem of turbidity in water systems that can help contractors to do their work and at the same time protect our aquatic eco-systems.

Alternative fuel

Fuel market i.e. coal, gas and oil market are interrelated to one another. When price of oil become higher than consumer increase the use of gas as a compliment of oil. Because of higher oil and gas price people are now concentrating on alternative source of energy. It is the only solution of reducing higher living cost. The usage of gas in our everyday life is inevitable. Natural gas is one of the best alternatives to oil. It is also very much convenient for environment. Natural gas is given the status of the cleanest of the fossil fuel (Eric & Smith 2002, p.39). The united states have an ample reserve of natural gas. Natural gas plays an important role on the development of socio-economical condition of the country. Households and large-scale commercial industries largely depend upon the natural gas. So any interruptions in the supply of natural gas can hamper the smooth flows of our daily life. The demand of natural gas is increasing rapidly. Because of new houses and industries which run on natural gas are establishing day by day. This increasing demand for natural gas makes imbalance between the supply and the demand process. This imbalance keeps the prices of natural gas up. The alternatives source of energy can be the best solution of rapid energy demand. The sources of energy, which are considering as an alternative to gas, are solar power, wind power, and biomass or bio-fuel etc.
There are some alternative sources of energy. Some of them are described below-
• Bio-fuel is one of the best alternatives of fossil fuel. The use of bio-fuel is increased all over the world. Bio-fuel industries are expanding in Europe, Asia and in USA. Human have used biomass fuel for heating and cooking since the discovery of fire.
• Crops such as grain, vegetable oil and sugar are the main component of bio-fuel. Bio-fuel resources are available in every country. It will reduce the emission of green house gas and it is cheaper to produce. Bio-fuel can be used to generate electricity. It is also able to operate vehicles. We can cook by using bio-fuel.
• Solar energy can also be alternative sources of energy. We can easily obtain electricity from sunlight. There are several kinds of device that are available in market can convert sunlight into electricity. We can use a solar power for various purposes such as –
• Space heating and space cooling system can be operated through solar system (Lof, 1980). It can be used for lighting. Many solar energy driven cars are available in market. Solar energy can be used for cooking. The main advantage of solar energy is, it is cheaper and positive to environment.
Fuel demand is increasing with the increase of population. Natural resources like oil gas are limited and it will be exhausted in course of time. So, alternative source of energy can be the best solution for the future demand of fuel. If we are able to explore alternative renewable energy sources it will reduce our dependency on natural gas.
